gVolante server down

I need to let you know that the gVolante server (which was mentioned here before) has been down since the evening of the day before yesterday (October 20th).

This wasn't planned—it's due to a hardware issue. Unfortunately, we don't have a timeline for recovery or a solid workaround right now, so please bear with us.

Since it first went live, the server has been maintained thanks to the dedication of the paper's lead author, Dr. Osamu Nishimura, and support from RIKEN BDR in Kobe. Yuichiro Hara, who's been a huge help with investigating the reference gene sets (and introducing CVG), was also a co-author. The server trouble happened right as we were getting ready to make some changes to keep up with the frequent updates to BUSCO, the pipeline used for Completeness Assessment inside gVolante.

gVolante actually started with a simple idea: "could be super useful!" (especially since tools like CEGMA were a pain to run locally). We never expected so many researchers to find it useful. We know there's probably nothing only gVolante can do, but if you have any strong feelings or hopes for its recovery, please don't hesitate to reach out and let us know.

It went live just before the paper was published, so it was actually about to hit its 10th anniversary. It's totally understandable that new evaluation tools, suited for modern needs, are going to be necessary.

We'll be posting any future updates about this right here on the lab's blog (and on our X account).
