Our aquarium tanks

Believe it or not, we, Kuraku Lab at National Institute of Genetics, maintain aquarium tanks hosting three shark species.

Cloudy catshark トラザメ (Scyliorhinus torazame)

Small spotted catshark ハナカケトラザメ (Scyliorhinus canicula)

Brownbanded bamboo shark イヌザメ (Chiloscyllium punctatum)

For the third species C. punctatum, we characterized the karyotype (2n=106; Uno et al., 2020) and the nuclear genome content (4.73 Gb; Hara et al., 2018) and also provided a developmental staging table (Onimaru et al., 2018) and whole genome sequences (Hara et al., 2018). Because of its relatively large body size (>1m), we don't keep adults of this species. Those working inside our lab (or working closely) can utilize embryonic materials of these species for their biological research flexibly.
